Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic (long term) disorder of the digestive system that can cause abdominal pain, bloating, excessive wind, diarrhoea and constipation. It’s exact causes are not known andalthough symptoms can be made worse by anxiety, depression or stress. Medical diagnosis is always advised as some symptoms can mimic those of diseases such as Coeliac disease or Bowel Cancer.

When you have a diagnosis of IBS you may be advised to moderate your diet, increasing or decreasing the amount of fibre in your diet, reducing your intake of tea, coffee, alchohol or fizzy drinks, increasing oats in your diet and taking time to chew your foods properly. Many sufferers find relief in a wheat-reduced or wheat-free diet - it’s not surprising there are more and more people who seem to be becoming sensitive to the gluten (latin: glue) in wheat when you realise the amount of wheat in our diets - not only where you might expect to find it!

Hypnotherapy & IBS

Hypnosis can help to reduce stress and anxiety and also to change the subconscious attitude to the symptoms you have. By hypnotic visualisation the flow of the digestive system can be calmed and spasms relaxed and a self hypnosis recording can help relaxation and reduce anxiety between sessions.

With Regression Therapy we would usually focus on the physical effects of IBS, where the pain is and what it feels like, to transport you to the source of the problem.

Debbie* felt spasms around her large intestines and, even though she had been diagnosed with IBS, she kept feeling that she had something that she was going to die of, such as bowel cancer. During regression she went back to a past life when she had had a Caesarian operation without any form of anaesthetic, which had, as was normal at that time, caused her death. Her last thoughts were ‘It’s killing me’. As she went back and understood that life, and that this was done to save her baby, her own choice, and was able to meet the child and see the connections with this life (her own mother died when she was very young), she was able to put those disturbing thoughts behind her and the pain and spasms disappeared completely.

Ther are no guarantees that symptoms will disappear completely like Debbie’s* but they are often reduced considerably or removed completely.

The fate of a nation is often dependent upon the good or bad digestion of a prime minister.
