Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a tool to access the subconscious and affect the desired changes and is a very useful therapy for a variety of issues. It goes to the source of the problem, in the depths of your subconscious. This allows you to make permanent changes in your behaviour by ‘reprogramming’ your subconscious with positive suggestions. My clients generally find it a very relaxing and positive form of therapy which is effective in both physical and psychological conditions.
An initial appointment will include some background information gathering and a discussion of the problem you are presenting with and how it affects your life. Often this initial discussion will reveal a deeper issue that you may wish to look at, for instance, someone presenting with public speaking problems may have a wider confidence problem. I will talk to you about hypnotherapy and how I can help you. During this free initial ½hr consultation period, if you are not perfectly happy, you are welcome not to continue with therapy, at no cost to you.
Assuming you are ready to go ahead, I would then expect to give you your initial hypnotherapy session.
Generally in this first session I will take you into trance and include some positive suggestions to start work on your problem so that you can begin to see some differences in your daily life. Following consultations would continue to work on any developments that have been experienced in the interim.
I like, where possible, to send you a questionnaire to fill in before this appointment. This saves time, stops this first session turning into a ‘question and answer’ session and, most importantly, helps me tailor the hypnosis to you and your needs.
I am committed, in my practice, to helping you resolve your issues as quickly as possible and, although the amount of appointments you may require depends on many factors, hypnotherapy is not a therapy that should take years to solve them!
Hypnosis conjures up images of swinging watches, people running around like chickens, and the oft quoted "look into my eyes" - it seems that stage hypnotists have done us a disservice in the image of hypnosis, even if they have raised it's profile and proved to the public that it works!
Although the term 'Hypnosis' was first coined in the 19th century there is evidence that it was used therapeutically by the Hindus of Ancient India and the Ancient Egyptians in their ‘Sleep Temples', and many belief systems use trance as a way of accessing spiritual understanding or healing which is induced by similar methods to those we can use to induce hypnosis (chanting, mantras, rhythmic drumming & other rituals).
Hypnotherapy was accepted by the British Medical Association as a form of orthodox medicine in 1892 however it still seems to straddle the gap between the accepted orthodoxies of psychology, psychiatry & psychotherapy and the complementary or alternative therapies. Most forms of psychotherapy use only talking therapies (such as CBT), though some also use other forms of communication such as the written word, artwork, drama, or narrative story. However, we all know that, just because we know why we do something, it doesn’t necessarily stop us doing it and just because we know that certain beliefs we have about ourselves are not logical, we still have those thoughts.
Hypnotherapy is a method of accessing this internal focus of concentrated attention, in partnership with the therapist, in order to attain a desirable therapeutic outcome. It has been shown in scientific studies, time after time, to be an effective therapy for many different issues: IBS; Cancer; Pain Control; Weight Loss; Healing after Surgery.....and many more. Those of us who use hypnosis in our therapies know that it can work for many other problems and provides an excellent tool for personal development, working directly on the subconscious.
